Refractory and Metallurgical Solutions Pty Ltd do not only provide various alumina-silicate and basic refractory products, both brick and monolithics, but strive to work with customers in providing refractory and metallurgical solutions. Over the last few years, RMS has worked closely with several customers to resolve tap block cracking issues, improve furnace roof refractory properties to prolong roof brick life, and have successfully completed developmental work with regard to a new furnace wall mag-spinel brick through our memorandum of understanding with Mintek. Some case studies will be shared to demonstrate the need to be technically driven and flexible to overcome the challenges  se online which customers incur within the pyrometallurgical environment.

The tap block case study looks at high alumina tap blocks and cracking issues incurred during the firing stage of the brick and the subsequent process of working through the various stages to resolve this manufacture cracking problem. A short review will be shared on improving high alumina roof brick properties by increasing life up to approximately 6 months. The mag-spinel brick was developed to reduce slag corrosion at the metal-slag interface in order to prolong the side wall refractory life.

The SAMMM Zululand Branch Committee would like to thank Refractory and Metallurgical Solutions Pty Ltdfor sponsoring the 22 June 2017 branch event.
